Remembering Chewy

30 Mar 2005 - 05 Nov 2009

our beloved son...

he became part of our family on 05 July 2005 - i bought him from Pet Lovers Center in Simei for DH's birthday. he was such a cute little darling - the only puppy that wasn't barking for my attention in the shop - instead, he looked at me with his sweet puppy eyes that were begging me to bring him home. i thought long and hard before deciding to bring him back and i'm glad i did. he brought us much joy and happiness in the last 4 years + 4 months...

he loved chewing on things and looked like a piece of rug when he is lying down - reminded us of chewbacca in star wars and that's how we decided to call him Chewy. can't remember how this nickname came about but he was affectionately known as 'tan ah bee' to us...

he was a gentle, little dog - small boned for his breed and such a good looking one...

he loved playing 'fetch' with us but never actually brought us his ball - he likes us to wrestle it away from him...

he won a 'drinking water' contest @ pasir ris in 2005 - not because he really finished the water but because his fur soaked up all the water (which dripped all over the place)...

he hated swimming - and i've always thought that dogs were natural swimmers...

he loved durians, apples & carrots...

we always joked that he was an obese dog - weighing too much for his size because of his greediness but in the last couple of weeks, he lost close to 1kg and became so thin...

he started peeing blood about 3 weeks ago and after consuming the antibotics prescribed by the vet, he stopped peeing blood and we thought he was getting better...

this morning @ approximately 6.30am, we heard him yelping and when dh went out to check on him, he was motionless - albeit still breathing. his tongue was white and there were blood spots in his eyes. we did a quick search on the internet for emergency vet services and rushed him to animal recovery center in balestier - he was then diagnosed with 'immune-mediated thrombocytopenia' after doing a full blood work which detected that he had zero platelets. basically his immune system mistook the platelets as 'enemies' and started destroying them. peeing blood was actually a symptom but was not picked up by the previous vet that we consulted.

he was put on intravenous therapy in the hospital and we went home so that the kids could get some sleep. at 10am+, dh got a call from the hospital and rushed down to see him - he had coughed out blood and had a brain hemorrhage. by then, he was already bleeding internally. the vet did an emergency blood transfusion and put him on oxygen. his condition was said to have stabilised and dh went back to work. i called the hospital twice to check on him before dh came back and we made our way down to see him. unfortunately, i made a wrong decision (to bring dd to have her dinner) and we did not get to see him for the last time as he passed away a couple of minutes before we arrived at the hospital.

i'm so sorry dear chewy that you had to suffer alone - and for not being there for you during your last moments. May you be in a better place with our Dear Lord - you will always be our beloved and always live in our hearts...

dear chewy, we love you...
